Impact & Programs

Monitor. Measure. Remediate.

Environmental Charitable follows a data-first approach to community health. We monitor indoor and outdoor air quality, analyze the results, and deploy the right solution for what the science actually shows — not what we assume.

How it works

Results Drive Every Decision

Before any equipment is deployed, we measure. Our team conducts indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring at residential properties — capturing real data on what residents are actually breathing. The results determine everything that follows.

Different pollutants require different solutions. High VOC readings call for air purifiers. Methane emissions require vapor barriers. Elevated PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels mean HEPA filtration is needed indoors. We match the remedy to the reading — every time.

Our programs

From Monitoring to Mitigation

01

Indoor & Outdoor Air Quality Monitoring

We deploy monitoring equipment at residential properties to measure both indoor and outdoor air simultaneously. This gives us a complete picture of what pollutants are entering the home and at what concentrations. Monitoring is always the first step — no remediation begins without data.

Outcomes

  • Simultaneous indoor and outdoor readings at each property
  • Baseline data established before any intervention
  • Post-remediation testing confirms whether the solution worked
  • Data shared with residents, regulators, and grant partners

02

VOC Remediation — Air Purifiers

When monitoring results show elevated VOC (volatile organic compound) concentrations indoors, the recommended solution is air purification. Environmental Charitable sources, funds, and installs air purifiers directly in affected homes. Units range from $300 to $2,000 each, and we prioritize seniors and families who cannot afford them.

Outcomes

  • Deployed when monitoring confirms elevated VOC levels
  • Portable and central units installed based on home size
  • In-kind donated units accepted and deployed
  • Follow-up monitoring verifies VOC reduction

03

Methane & VOC Intrusion — Vapor Barriers

When monitoring detects methane emissions or VOC intrusion through soil and structural gaps, the solution is vapor barrier installation. Our team of engineers, construction retirees, and skilled volunteers installs barriers that block both methane and VOCs from migrating into the home through floors, walls, and foundation cracks.

Outcomes

  • Deployed when methane or soil-source VOC intrusion is confirmed
  • Barriers installed at floors, foundations, and structural entry points
  • Combined with air sealing for maximum protection
  • Post-installation monitoring confirms intrusion is blocked

04

PM 2.5 & PM 10 — HEPA Filtration

Fine and coarse particulate matter — PM 2.5 and PM 10 — from diesel trucks, industrial operations, and construction activity require HEPA-grade filtration to remove from indoor air. When monitoring shows elevated particulate readings, we deploy HEPA air filtration units sized for the affected space.

Outcomes

  • Deployed when PM 2.5 or PM 10 readings exceed safe thresholds
  • HEPA units sized and placed for maximum room coverage
  • Particularly critical for residents near diesel truck corridors
  • Ongoing monitoring tracks particulate levels after deployment

05

Cooling & Energy Resilience

Extreme heat forces residents to keep windows closed — trapping polluted air inside and making purification equipment the only line of defense. We install portable and central AC units so residents can stay cool without opening windows to outdoor pollution. Backup power units ensure protection continues during outages.

Outcomes

  • Portable and central AC units deployed to heat-vulnerable homes
  • Backup power protects air purifiers and HEPA units during outages
  • Integrated with monitoring to track indoor air during heat events
  • Priority given to seniors and medically vulnerable residents

What the data shows

What We Find in the Field

Our independent monitoring has documented pollutant levels across the Costa Mesa Westside that confirm what residents have long reported. The data is not ambiguous.

Elevated VOCs

Volatile organic compounds detected at elevated concentrations in indoor and outdoor air samples — triggering air purifier deployment.

Methane emissions

Methane detected migrating through soil and structural gaps into residential spaces — addressed with vapor barrier installation.

PM 2.5 fine particulates

Fine particulate matter from diesel traffic and industrial operations measured at levels requiring HEPA filtration indoors.

PM 10 coarse particulates

Coarse particulate matter from construction and industrial activity detected at levels harmful to respiratory health.

Metal fumes

Industrial metal fume residue found in air samples near active manufacturing operations on the Westside.

Soil & waterway contamination

Contaminants detected in soil samples and local waterways adjacent to industrial sites, contributing to vapor intrusion risk.

How we are funded

Grants Pending. Private Donations Fill the Gap.

Environmental Charitable has invested over $100,000 out-of-pocket to build this program from the ground up. Grant applications are pending with government and foundation sources. While we wait, private donations and in-kind contributions are what keep the work moving forward.

Every dollar donated goes directly to equipment, materials, and program delivery. There is no administrative overhead absorbing your contribution. This is a lean, mission-driven operation run by people who live and work in this community.

In-Kind Donations Needed

  • Air purifiers (portable and central units)
  • HEPA air filtration units
  • Vapor barriers and weatherization supplies
  • Portable and central AC units
  • Backup power units and batteries
  • Air quality monitoring sensors (indoor and outdoor)
