Environmental Charitable was founded in 2020 with a mission to investigate industrial pollution and protect the health and well-being of residents in West Costa Mesa, California.
Our journey began with a simple but urgent question: What is affecting the air inside our homes, and what can we do to protect our community?
As I began investigating environmental concerns in the Westside community, I donated inspection equipment and environmental monitoring instruments to support our work. I also conducted pro bono air and soil testing in several homes, determined to better understand the environmental conditions residents were experiencing.
The findings raised serious concerns. Our investigations identified readings involving industrial solvents and combustible gases, including substances such as perchloroethylene (PCE), methane, and hydrogen sulfide. Measurements reported during our investigations included PCE readings of 2 parts per million (ppm) and combustible-gas readings of 8% of the lower explosive limit (LEL). These measurements required careful interpretation in relation to the substance, testing method, applicable standards, and conditions at the time of testing.
For residents, the numbers were difficult to understand. What did they mean? Could they present a health or safety concern? And what steps could families take to reduce their potential exposure?
We believed that people deserved answers, understandable information, and practical assistance.
Environmental testing was only the beginning. We recognized that residents needed more than monitoring equipment and technical reports. They needed the knowledge to understand environmental risks and the confidence to take action.
We began providing free community education, explaining environmental measurements, potential health concerns, and practical ways to improve indoor air quality.
We also conducted a community survey that raised concerns about the health challenges experienced by residents, many of whom are older adults. Respondents reported conditions including asthma and cardiac problems, along with a concerning number of cancer cases. Approximately 20% of surveyed residents were reported to have had cancer.
These survey findings were deeply troubling. Although a community survey alone cannot establish that environmental contamination caused particular illnesses, the reported health concerns strengthened our commitment to investigating potential environmental risks and advocating for answers.
Residents were confronted with difficult questions about the safety of their homes and the possible legacy of industrial activity in their neighborhood. Many felt shocked, worried, and uncertain about what to do next.
We knew that awareness had to lead to action.
Environmental Charitable began working directly with residents to identify practical ways to improve home environments and reduce potential exposure to indoor air pollutants.
Our work has included:
Much of this work has been carried out through donated resources, volunteer efforts, and services provided without charge. Our goal has been to help residents take meaningful steps toward healthier indoor environments, even when financial resources are limited.
We understand that air filtration and home repairs are not substitutes for identifying and addressing pollution at its source. They are practical measures that can help residents while broader environmental concerns continue to be investigated.
We believe that lasting progress begins with an informed community.
Environmental Charitable organizes monthly community meetings and distributes a weekly newsletter sharing environmental reports, health-related information, and developments affecting local residents.
These efforts have helped bring neighbors together, encourage the exchange of information, and give residents a stronger voice in discussions about their environment and well-being.
Education is not simply one of our activities. It is a foundation of our mission. When residents understand the issues affecting their homes, they are better equipped to ask questions, seek assistance, participate in public discussions, and advocate for meaningful solutions.
There is still much work to be done in West Costa Mesa.
Environmental concerns do not disappear overnight, and restoring confidence in the safety of our homes requires continued investigation, cooperation, resources, and community participation.
Environmental Charitable remains committed to environmental awareness, resident education, indoor-air-quality improvement, and practical mitigation efforts. We believe every resident deserves access to understandable environmental information and the opportunity to live in a healthier home.
Our work began with a willingness to investigate. It grew through education and hands-on assistance. Today, it continues through the determination of a community working together for a healthier future.
